What's this site for?

This space is designed to enable you to work together on exciting online projects. You will be able to share your work with your family. When you work in a group you will post to the group page. Independent activities will be posted to the pages you create for yourself and save in your own folder. Being respectful of other people's work is very important. One of the students' favorite wiki destinations is Moving Pictures. All students and parents must first read and sign the acceptable use policy before they will be permitted to participate. Spring break is nearly behind us... This week we launch into a study of magnets, geometry and a review of reading comprehension skills and strategies. We are still collecting and storing the knowledge we will need to apply in two weeks during standardized testing. Once that hurdle has been leaped we will find ourselves enjoying Field Day activities and WRAD Day! The last week of school is a special week in 3rd grade. We call it Camp-Learned-a-Lot! It's been a great year but it's not over yet! Full steam ahead!

It's a SNOW DAY! And this time we actually have snow instead of ice. When my children were little we lived in Chicago. We had picnics in the snow with a thermos full of hot chocolate and build forts, tunnels, chairs out of snow and even a maze! Snow can be wonderful if you dress for it. Wear many layers, plastic baggies over your feet and be sure to go inside when you your clothes begin to get soaking wet. Put them in the dryer and relax. When they are dry, head out once again. You have to pace yourselves. I can't wait to hear all about who has the best driveway or hill for sledding. What? No sled? You can use any flat plastic or a cardboard box. Be creative.

Here it is, Thanksgiving week and our wiki has become a true extension of the classroom. Some students visit to find links while others use some of their free time to develop content. The class has been able to experiment with a variety of different web 2 tools. They have weekly assignments to post and comments to make. In some ways I feel we need something more like a social networking site to serve the needs of the classroom. This week I will introduce tagging and I hope that will make finding similar pages much easier. I wish I could feed certain tags into an rss wdiget and embed it into the home page. Time to write to pbworks!

Just last night Ms. Becker, 5th grade and I met with several teachers from Cogburn Woods to discuss how to use wikis in the classroom. Looks like this type of website is catching on with educators in Fulton County.

I am collaborating with Mrs Ezzard at High Point Elementary and Ms Alexander from Feldman Elementary both of whom started classroom wikis this year. We are sharing some great ways to involve students and to connect them across the county.

OK, I am stunned! The amount of conversation being generated on our wiki in the first week of production is unprecedented! Yes, we need to work on sentence construction, and developing meaningful posts, but the enthusiasm is just delightful! I am very pleased with the students' thoughtful, responsible use of our wiki thus far.

Oh! It's nice to see people checking out our space. Students will get copies of the user agreements and when they have been signed by both students and parents, they will have "writer" level access to this wiki. They will have their own folder and the ability to create pages, upload pictures and comment on each others' pages.
