Restaurant Planning Math Project

Activity Based on Danny's Diner

Students will apply their multiplication skills in a real life simulation based on an example found in Breakfast at Danny's Diner.  In the story, the children help out their uncle and learn how multiplication and division are used from the minute they are asked to determine how many placemats they need and becomes even more interesting when they have to figure out the number of eggs, bacon and toast must be made in order to serve 6 patrons the SPECIAL!

Teams of 3-4 students are formed.

The task is to plan a restaurant.

Goal: Run restaurant simulation on Monday, Tuesday, November 16.

Roles are assigned to each team member: (Job desc. are suggestions)

  1.           Owner - Primary decision make, settles disputes, make sure tasks are completed, help as needed, order taking, food making, manage to business
  2.           Waitress/Waiter  - Illustrations, menus, order slips
  3.           Cashier - Record all of names on the checklist, tally amount of each item sold
  4.           Cook - Inventory and pricing, food design

List the duties for each person. The owner should settle disputes by making the final decisions after team members have attempted to work out a compromise.  Jobs should be equally distributed so that each member contributes to the planning and running of the restaurant. Someone will need to take responsibility for each of the tasks below. Record their names on the sheet.

Checklist of decisions to make:

Sales Slip for the waiter or waitress.
